From Barcelona to Madrid

The original plan: get to Madrid from Barcelona on an affordable overnight bus, saving one night’s cash on our hostel (they’re relatively more expensive here: ~$15-$20 USD a night!).

Unfortunately, I learned the hard way (in other words, almost at the last minute) that buses do not run overnight on Christmas Eve. And Spain’s hi-speed railway cost about $100 USD per person. Therefore, in the name of saving time and money, I settled on the ironic choice of taking a flight: a surprisingly low airfare of $60 USD. And we would save 5 hours on transportation.

…but not sleep:

5:30am wakeup call. 5:45am we leave the hostel. Take the metro at 6am. Get to the Airport shuttle at 6:15am. Get to the airport at 6:45am. Check-in at 7am.

And 4 hours later, we find ourselves in Madrid.

…and reuniting with the final 2 members of our posse at Cat’s Hostel.

Prelude is over. The trip has just begun.
